Modern Day Stereotypes And Prejudice - 962 Words

Modern day stereotypes and prejudice only help to nationalize the hysteria and make it appear like less of a problem and more like entertainment. This can be seen, specifically, with the current Syrian Refugee Crisis occurring in the United States. Walter Kirn, an American novelist and literary critic, stated that ‘‘Everyone loves a witch hunt as long as it’s someone else’s witch being hunted.’’ (Kirn, Walter). Thus, proving that the Crucible was also looked upon as daily entertainment and the Syrian Refugee Crisis. Society has become more susceptible to hysteria since the Salem Witch Trials because of it’s contentment. In order to best understand the situations, one needs to acknowledge the tensions and who is responsible. In The Crucible, a group of teenage girls, namely Abigail Williams, are liable for starting the hysteria. The hysteria was created by Abigail when she started to accuse people of witchcraft to release the underlying tensions. ‘‘‘I saw Sarah Good with the Devil! I saw Goody Osburn with the Devil! I saw Bridget Bishop with the Devil!’’’ (Miller 54). Abigail accuses these people because they are scapegoats who are the, supposed, reasons for the tension. The accused are people that are looked upon as the outcasts, suspected and unknown. Similarly, In the Syrian Refugee Crisis, the accused are looked upon as the witches were but on a larger scale. ‘‘Psychologically, a single victim is a tragedy; four million is a statistic.’’ (DTMH).
